The story

He walked past this sign every morning. Now his crews work beside it.

Nick Small graduated from Hollywood Hills High School, went off to school in Boston, and joined the Army Reserves after September 11th. In 2012 he founded U.S. Pave.

He calls himself a product of public education, and he means it literally: the school gave him the footing to build a company. So when his oldest son started at Hollywood Hills and Nick pulled into the same lot he’d parked in as a student, he saw the potholes right away — and sent a crew.

That’s the pattern. Schools rarely have money left over for the parking lot, so the parking lot waits. Nick’s view is simple: U.S. Pave paves for large corporations and big commercial properties — it has even done the Super Bowl and F1 racing. Those clients can pay. A school shouldn’t have to. By 2020 the company could afford to give real work away, and it has — at six campuses, including the district’s own headquarters. None of it was billed. Every job was donated: labor, materials, equipment and time.

All of it was done the way U.S. Pave does its commercial work: full root remediation instead of patching over it, ADA stalls rebuilt to code, courtesy signage, crews on site at 7 a.m. on a Saturday so the lot is open Monday. In 2025 the effort got a name — Pave It Forward™, in partnership with the Broward Education Foundation — and every lot U.S. Pave completes now carries a sign that says so.

“We pave a lot of big-box and big commercial places. We even did the Super Bowl and F1 racing. It’s hard taking money from schools.”Nick Small, Founder & CEO, U.S. Pave

The program

Three to four nonprofit lots a year. Donated in full. Every one gets the sign.

Pave It Forward™ is built for nonprofits with parking lots — schools first — so they never have to spend their money repairing or maintaining them. U.S. Pave takes on three to four lots a year, donated in full, in partnership with the Broward Education Foundation, where U.S. Pave has been a Friends of the Foundation partner since 2024.

Every completed lot gets the sign

“This parking lot is proudly maintained by U.S. Pave — through our Pave It Forward™ program in partnership with Broward Education Foundation. Improving Broward County Schools one lot at a time.” Posted at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center, downtown Fort Lauderdale, and at each campus as work is completed.

Sealed with TreadCoat™ — 266 tires recycled into school lots

As of October 2026, and the number rises with every sealcoat. TreadCoat™ is America’s recycled-rubber sealcoat, developed by U.S. Pave. K.C. Wright averages 67 tires per seal and has been sealed twice (134); McArthur took 132. Every lot gets a sign that says how many.

Going forward

Three to four nonprofit parking lots a year — schools first — plus ongoing care of the K.C. Wright lot. Each one donated, signed and sealed with TreadCoat™. Built to grow.

The record

Hollywood Hills High School

Hollywood · 2020–2025$31,300

Nick’s alma mater — and the campus where the whole thing started.

In September 2020, Nick brought a sports-turf contractor and the school’s athletic director together to talk about building Hollywood Hills a stadium of its own. He paid an engineering firm $8,900 for a complete set of plans: a 97,260-square-foot FieldTurf field to NFHS standards, Spartans end zones, site layout and all. In September 2021 he presented it to a room of district facilities and athletics staff at the school.

The stadium hasn’t been built yet. But from 2022 on, U.S. Pave came back every year — three rounds of asphalt repair across the front and Community School lots, new car stops, two seasons of football-field striping, pressure washing, and a fresh stripe on the student lot. In May 2025 Nick stood on the auditorium stage and handed two graduating Spartans $2,000 U.S. Pave scholarships each — and the football team got $1,000 of its own.

  • Asphalt repair, front & Community School lots (3 visits, 2022–24)$18,000
  • Football field striping, two seasons$4,000
  • Pressure washing & student lot striping$3,500

K.C. Wright Administration Center

School Board of Broward County headquarters · Fort Lauderdale · 2024–2026$84,000

The School Board’s own front door — a paid public lot in downtown Fort Lauderdale, used every day by district police, permit holders and the public.

U.S. Pave has maintained the K.C. Wright surface lot for three consecutive years: two full sealcoat-and-stripe cycles with TreadCoat™, fresh striping in the parking garage — and the job nobody else was going to take.

In the middle of the lot sat a raised concrete island left over from a gated guard entrance. The shack was long gone, but everything under it wasn’t: the island itself, the steel bollards, the shade-sail canopy, and the electrical conduit and plumbing still buried in the slab. It was in the way of every car that came through. U.S. Pave took all of it out — cut the canopy poles, pulled the bollards, broke out and hauled off the concrete, disconnected and removed the electrical and plumbing, then excavated and rebuilt the base where the footings had been. Finally the area was paved to match the surrounding lot so cleanly that no one would know an island had been there. Demolition, utilities, concrete, earthwork and asphalt — on a live pay lot, staged in sections so it never closed.

  • Sealcoat & stripe, full lot — two cycles$44,000
  • Guard-entrance island demolished — concrete, bollards, canopy, electrical & plumbing removed; base rebuilt; paved to match the lot$32,000
  • Parking garage striping$8,000

Sunshine Elementary School

Miramar · October 2025$38,000

A lot that had actually failed — and the largest single gift U.S. Pave has made to a Broward school.

Water stood at the student drop-off canopy every time it rained. The pavement around every storm drain had sunk and cracked. Along the faculty fence line, mature tree roots had lifted the asphalt clean off the base — the row was bare dirt with car stops sitting loose in it, coned off because there was nothing left to park on. The ADA ramps were split through.

Working with the school’s principal and School Board Member Rebecca Thompson’s office, U.S. Pave scheduled the job for a Saturday so the lot would be open Monday. Crews dug out the entire root-damaged run, hauled the root masses, rebuilt the base, and laid new asphalt in every failed area. Then the whole lot was sealed with TreadCoat™ and re-striped, with ADA stalls, hatched aisles and new wheel stops rebuilt to code.

  • Root remediation — full excavation of the faculty parking run
  • Full-depth asphalt repair at drains, gate apron and failed areas
  • TreadCoat™ sealcoat and complete re-striping
  • ADA stalls, access aisles and ramps rebuilt; five new car stops$38,000

McArthur High School

Hollywood · 2025–2026$34,000

Concrete, asphalt and a Friday night on national television.

In May 2025, U.S. Pave tore out the beat-up asphalt walkways that carried fans from the parking lot to the home bleachers, dug them out, built a new base, formed and poured two new concrete sidewalks up to the stands.

In August 2026, with the Mustangs scheduled for a game broadcast on ESPN, U.S. Pave donated a full sealcoat and re-stripe of the front parking lot — new ADA stalls and signage, a double-yellow drive lane, a hatched loading zone at the covered walkway, numbered student stalls and a crosswalk at the front doors. The teacher lot is next.

The sealcoat was TreadCoat™ — 132 recycled tires went into the McArthur lot, about 2,640 lbs of rubber kept out of the landfill. U.S. Pave is also a season sponsor of Mustang football.

  • Front parking lot — TreadCoat™ sealcoat (132 tires recycled) & full re-stripe$22,000
  • Two new concrete sidewalks to the football stands$12,000

Western High School

Davie · 2024–2025$18,800

Sunrise starts, so the lot is done before the first bell.

U.S. Pave repaired the failed areas across Western’s front and guest lots in 2025 — pink-marked, saw-cut, and patched full-depth — with crews unloading at dawn and courtesy signs at the front walk.

Before that, in 2024, Nick and his crew lined the Wildcats’ football field twice for the season: yard lines, hash marks and numbers, stenciled by hand. In 2025 they came back to reposition the goal post on the practice field. Off the pavement, U.S. Pave has backed the Wildcat booster club two years running — $1,000 in 2024 and $4,800 in 2025.

  • Asphalt repairs, front & guest lots — 2025$9,000
  • Football field striping, two seasons — 2024$4,000
  • Western booster club — 2024 & 2025$5,800

South Plantation High School

Plantation · October 17, 2026$4,000

Students in the Environmental Science & Everglades Restoration Magnet Program raised the money for engraved commemorative bricks. On Saturday, October 17, U.S. Pave installs them — the same kind of brick walk that marks generations of Spartans at Hollywood Hills.

The driveway to my house was breaking up and non-existent in places. These guys came in with all the right equipment. They removed the old asphalt, added more aggregate to rebuild base, and then hot rolled fresh asphalt on top, all for a competitive price. Highly recommended.

Dayna T.

Nick and his team were amazing from the 1st call. They came out quickly to provided a estimate. They kept their word, showed up on time, were efficient and finished when he said he would. Very professional and high quality work. They showed up on time and before I knew it they were finished. They did a great job and cleaned up after themselves when it was completed. Reeves was my first contact and was very helpful. The estimated cost was accurate for my odd shaped driveway and I am more than pleased with the outcome. Thank you U.S Pave and Reeves for doing such a great job!
