First, we\u2019ll level the driveway area, add eight to ten inches of gravel and prepare the surface if it is unstable with geotextile fabric netting and drainpipes when necessary. We\u2019ll also add a soil sterilizer beneath the gravel. That will kill weeds and ensure a stable subsurface or footing for the asphalt pavement.<\/p>\n

Then, we\u2019ll apply two layers of asphalt. A base layer with \u00bd to \u00be inch gravels stones 2 \u00bd to 3 inches thick. The topcoat or top layer will use 3\/8-inch gravel stones to 1 \u00bd inches thick. The total asphalt will be no less than three inches thick.<\/p>\n

The thickness will often depend on the material used. We could use hot-mixed asphalt, acrylic polymer with colors, asphalt with pattern stamps or chip seal.<\/p>\n

Repairing an Asphalt Driveway<\/h3>\n

For cracks in an asphalt driveway, use some weed killer in the cracks and then fill \u00bd inch cracks with \u00bc inch of sand and the rest with a quality driveway crack filler or Quikrete\u00ae Blacktop Repair.<\/p>\n

You can fill holes and cracks of one or two inches with Tamp and Set Patch or Trowel and Spread Patch. For the bigger holes, fill the hole to within four inches of the top with gravel and then add Super Patch. Use a 4×4-inch beam or tamping pin to tamp everything down as you go.<\/p>\n
